Frequently Asked Questions

How do I win the game?

You win by correctly guessing which stock gained the most value on the last trading day. The answer stock is shown from the start with a gold background (or silver in practice mode), but its logo is hidden behind the Stocktangle logo.

What is the bomb and what happens if I guess it?

The bomb is the stock that lost the most value during the trading day. If you guess it, you instantly lose the game. The bomb is always shown in black on the treemap. There is no bomb in practice mode.

How often does the game update?

There is one new game per day, starting at midnight UTC (12:00 AM UTC). The game uses data from the most recent trading day when the stock market was open.

What happens if I guess a stock in the same sector or industry as the answer?

If you guess a stock in the same sector as the answer, the available guesses will automatically filter down to only stocks in that sector. You can narrow it down even further by guessing a stock that shares the answer's industry.

What stocks can I guess from?

The list varies by day, but it's usually the top 100 stocks in the S&P 100 index. If the game is based on the same market data as the previous day (because the market wasn't open), the list expands to a larger index like the S&P 500.

How is the percentage gain calculated?

The gain is the percentage difference between the market close value on the data date and the close value from the previous trading day. For example: if a stock closed at $154.85 on Friday and $162.25 on Monday, the gain would be (162.25 - 154.85) / 154.85 = 4.78%.

What does the treemap show?

The treemap is a visualization where each stock is represented by a colored rectangle. The color shows the percentage change (bright green for high gains, bright red for sharp losses), and the size represents the stock's market cap. The answer stock is always gold, and the bomb is always black.

How do I use the grouping and labels in the treemap?

When 2 or more stocks in the treemap share the same sector, they're grouped together with a label at the top. Stocks in the same industry within a sector are grouped even more tightly with a label at the bottom. Click on a label to filter the treemap to only show stocks in that group. Click the label again to clear the filter.

What is practice mode?

Practice mode lets you play unlimited games using the same market data as the daily game. You can choose which stock index to practice on (only smaller indices than the daily game are available). The answer stock is chosen randomly and shown in silver instead of gold, and there is no bomb.

Where does the stock data come from?

All stock market data comes from the APIs provided by EODHD.

Can I click on stocks in the treemap?

Yes! You can click on any stock in the treemap to learn more about its fundamentals.
